 The first pioneers in what is now the Fredericksburg area in Texas were German settlers. The earliest pioneer homes in Texas were built of hides stretched over timbers.

The most important buildings in these early pioneer communities were the schools and churches, and in some areas of Central Texas these buildings still stand today.
